Storyline 3: Opt Out of Sending Usage Data to Articulate by Changing Your Privacy Preference

You can help improve Storyline 3 by sending usage data to our servers. We analyze feature metrics and error reports from Storyline 3 as well as anonymized device and browser data when learners view published courses. If you'd prefer to opt out of these analytics, change your privacy preference Storyline 3. Here’s how.

  1. Open an existing project in Storyline 3 or create a new project.
  2. Go to the File tab on the ribbon and click Storyline Options.
  3. Uncheck the Privacy box and click OK.

That’s it! Storyline 3 and the courses you publish from this point forward won’t send usage data to our servers. If a serious error occurs in Storyline 3, you might see an error message asking to share the details with us. You can choose to send or ignore the error.

What data does Articulate collect from published courses?

When you enable analytics, we receive the following anonymized data from learners when they view a Storyline 3 course. We don’t see any personal information about the learner or the content of the course. We only collect general data to help us improve our products.

  • Operating system of the computer or mobile device
  • Display resolution
  • Web browser and version number
  • Web browser font download setting (enabled or disabled)
  • Web protocol (https, http, etc.)
  • Course load time
  • Player version (e.g., Storyline 3.6.18134.0)
  • Format of the course (HTML5 or Flash)
  • Platform that the course was published for (Web, LMS, etc.)
  • Tin Can API output (yes or no)
  • Resume setting (always resume, prompt to resume, or never resume)
  • Unique ID for the author that allows us to organize analytics from multiple learners by author
  • Unique ID for the course that allows us to organize analytics from multiple learners by course

Can I turn off analytics for individual courses?

Yes. You can share error reports and usage data with us generally and turn them off for individual courses. First, enable analytics in Storyline 3.

  1. Open an existing project in Storyline 3 or create a new project.
  2. Go to the File tab on the ribbon and click Storyline Options.
  3. Mark the Privacy box and click OK.

Then, follow these steps for each project where you want to turn off analytics.

  1. Publish your project, then open the folder that contains your published output.
  2. Open the story.html file in a text editor and replace suppressAnalytics: false with suppressAnalytics: true. Save and close the file.
  3. If you published for web distribution, you can skip this step and upload your published output to a web server. If you published for LMS distribution, open index_lms.html in a text editor and replace suppressAnalytics: false with suppressAnalytics: true. Save and close the file.
